Sound the Alarm is the American Red Cross's free smoke alarm installation program. By volunteering for this program, you would get to volunteer at your leisure to make appointments and install free smoke alarms for those in need. The Red Cross offices in South Bend and Elkhart are both stocked with smoke alarms that can be picked up, along with a drill, ladder, and a home visit bag to go to the home. This national program has ONLY ONE form to fill out with the resident and then three fire and natural disaster safety handouts to leave behind with residents to make sure they are safe in their home after we visit. We ask our volunteers to go out in groups of 2-3 for safety and speed's sake. Each home visit should last between 10-20 minutes to complete the installation, paperwork, and most importantly, life saving education to prevent and respond to fires and other natural disasters.
