This is the perfect opportunity for teachers who are interested in working with under-resourced middle school children and giving them the opportunity to succeed on and off the court. Teachers will have opportunities to learn more about social emotional learning (SEL) programs and how to mainstream SEL in teaching and will be connected to a network of caring and dedicated volunteers. Volunteers will also receive training on how to recognize and report child abuse (the course is approved by the Departments of Human Services, Education and State and is eligible for Act 48 credits).

Mission Statement

LAB’s Mission is to increase opportunities for underserved youth to succeed. Using basketball as a transformative tool, LAB’s programs focus on improving academic performance and social and emotional skills, while at the same time demonstrating the importance of community engagement. Our Vision is for all children to have equal opportunities and the social and emotional competence necessary to face the challenges of life. We hope to be able to reach more and more children using our unique methodology and four pillar curriculum that acknowledges the advantages of both classroom and sports based strategies to build social emotional competence and academic performance and combines them both.

Description

LAB is a 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit organization that grew out of the Chair and Vice Chair’s love of basketball and the simple idea that all children should have the same opportunities to succeed. Co-founders Jason Naum and Devin Adams understood the transformative power of basketball and set out to use it as a vehicle to increase academic performance and social and emotional competence in underserved and at risk youth.

Children participating in quality Social Emotional Learning (SEL) programs improve achievement by an average of 11 percentile points, exhibit more prosocial behaviors (such as empathy, sharing, and kindness), have less anxiety and stress, and improved attitudes about others and themselves.

LAB’s unique four pillar curriculum relies on a combination of basketball, mentoring, academic support, and community engagement, and acknowledges the advantages of both classroom and sports based strategies to build academic performance and social emotional competencies and combines them both.
