Since 1985, The Family Resource Center (TFRC) has provided free and confidential survivor and family services to help people cope with the trauma of abuse. From our 24-hour toll free phone line to accompanying victims to the hospital, TFRC is staffed by counselors and trained volunteers 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Center serves Kershaw and Lee Counties. TFRC supports victims throughout the recovery process with counseling and support plus offers forensic services, guidance and advocacy through medical and legal complexities. The Family Resource Center also serves as an active community educator providing primary prevention education programs to schools, community agencies, communities of faith etc. in areas such as healthy relationships, bullying and harassment, mandated reporter trainings, etc.

Our Purpose is to ensure vital services for victims and survivors of all forms of trauma (psychological, physical and sexual.) Secondly, to promote awareness and educate citizens of the state about the social and personal costs of abuse and sexual assault.

Our Philosophy is that we believe that oppression is the root of violence and we oppose it in all forms including but not limited to racism, sexism, classism, ageism, ethnocentrism, and homophobia. Second, we combat the roots of violence in ourselves, each other and within the larger economic political and social (including the family) systems. Third, we believe that perpetrators of interpersonal violence should be held accountable for their actions. And, finally, we believe in a consensus model of leadership to ensure everyone has an equal voice in decision-making.

Individuals looking to volunteer must be 18 years of age or older, be interviewed by the Volunteer Coordinator and/or other TFRC staff member and pass a SLED (South Carolina Law Enforcement Division) background check before completing the volunteer training.

If you are interested in learning more or would like to start the process of becoming a volunteer, please contact Lisa Truitt at 803-425-4357.
