Position: Strengthening Fathers Life Coach Volunteer

Time Commitment: Up to 1 year and at least 1-2-hours per week, per mentee

Strengthening Fathers Life Coaching Program- Life Coach Job Description

QUALIFICATIONS:

To Life Coach with the Strengthening Fathers Program, you must:

  • Be at least 25 years of age.
  • Reside in the Hampton Roads area
  • Provide a satisfactory Criminal Record and Driving Record Check
  • Have never been accused, arrested, charged, or convicted of child abuse or molestation
  • Not be a user of illicit drugs
  • Have access to an automobile or reliable transportation
  • Provide three satisfactory references who have known you for at least two years from the following categories; significant other/family, vulnerable sector/employment and personal
  • Complete an interview
  • Respect the confidential nature of our services and sign a confidentiality agreement

DUTIES:

Life Coaches will be expected to:

  • Able to work effectively with others who have diverse perspectives, talents, backgrounds, and/or styles
  • Ensure the safety and security of the mentee when they are together
  • Communicate openly and regularly with the program staff
  • Keep everyone informed of life changes that may impact the match
  • Work with the program staff and mentee to set goals for their match
  • Follows through with goals and commitments
  • Shows engaged and active listening so that others feel heard and understood
  • Be consistent and dependable and maintain a steady, positive presence in the mentee’s life
  • Involve the mentee in deciding how to spend time together
  • Listen to and respect the thoughts and viewpoints of the mentee, and focus on their strengths
  • Have realistic expectations, and be prepared for any issues that may arise
  • Use available resources, including the support and guidance of agency staff
  • Work with program staff to properly close the match when the match ends

Before matches start, all life coaches must complete mandatory pre-match training, which provides important information on how to respond to safety concerns. On an ongoing basis, program staff will discuss the safety and security of the match with Mentors, and Mentors should call the program staff if issues arise at any time during the match.
