Easter Lake Park
Enjoying the area we cleared

Enjoy the great outdoors with Green Iowa this March! Come help us remove invasive species and restore Easter Lake Park's natural biodiversity.

We will be meeting at shelter 3 ( see linked map below) for a brief orientation and training. All tools and safety equipment will be provided by Green Iowa and the parks department. We will be bringing a cooler, so feel free to bring any drinks or snacks for the day. Water will be provided.

Easter Lake Park is overrun with invasive species, harming the natural environment. Volunteers can help by being hands-on in the invasive species removal process which is vital to the survival of native oak trees. By assisting in the removal of invasive species, volunteers will learn proper identification techniques, reclaim land for community enjoyment, and restore Easter Lake Park for healthy wildlife habitat.

Children are welcome when accompanied by an adult.

Due to poison ivy, volunteers must wear long pants and closed-toed shoes. Thank you!

About Green Iowa AmeriCorps - Des Moines

Location:

2200 E Euclid Ave, Des Moines, IA 50317, US

Mission Statement

Helping make Iowans more energy efficient through low-impact home weatherization, energy education, and community outreach.

Description

Operated through the University of Northern Iowa's Center for Energy and Environmental Education, and hosted by Greater Des Moines Habitat for Humanity, Green Iowa AmeriCorps is a program founded upon the increasing need for energy and environmental improvement and education.

Concieved in 2009, Green Iowa's initial purpose was to increase the sustainable use of energy and environmental resources in several Iowa communities struggling to rebuild from the devastating floods of 2008. Since the start of the flood recovery, Green Iowa has been an active community partner; members are trained as energy auditors to contribute to a comprehensive home energy plan, allowing the program to offer home energy audits and weatherization at no cost to property owners. Other community involvement includes deconstruction, rehab, and repurpose projects; creating energy and environmental education programs for all ages; and developing and facilitating environmental and energy related events.

As of this year, we now have seven sites spread throughout Iowa in Black Hawk, Dubuque, Johnson, Jefferson, Linn, Polk, and Winneshiek counties.
