Our volunteers teach women and men who cannot attend formal English language classes due to caring for small children, work, transportation, or physical/psychological trauma. Volunteers are matched with a student that is convenient to their location and availability to help ensure a good fit. Volunteers either meet in the student's home or online.

We also have a Youth Program that pairs volunteers with elementary-school learners in grades Pre-K through 5.

Volunteers are not required to have prior teaching experience nor foreign language experience. They receive training before starting their work with students and ongoing training after they become teachers. IHELP provides teachers with lesson plans, books, workbooks, evaluation tools, and continuing support from IHELP staff.

In two one-hour sessions a week, teachers provide one-on-one instruction that includes speaking, reading, and writing English. Teachers also help students with life skills like making appointments and using public transportation.
