About

Education is the key to self-sufficiency as refugees rebuild their lives in America. Lutheran Social Services of the Southwest is seeking a volunteer to provide educational assistance to refugee students who need tutoring as they integrate into American classrooms.

Responsibilities
  • Provide tutoring to refugee students
  • Assist students in completing homework assignments
  • Practice English language skills (reading, writing, listening, and speaking) with parents and children
  • Report back to Children’s Services Specialist monthly, more often if needed
Qualifications
  • Ability to work independently with non-English speakers
  • Flexibility of schedule to accommodate needs of the family
  • Educational background preferred
  • English instructional experience preferred
Working conditions

The volunteer will serve inside the home of the refugee clients. Clients are primarily located in west Phoenix.

Clearances required & training

This role requires a fingerprint clearance card ($65) volunteers are responsible for the cost. All volunteers will complete a free central registry background check when they attend orientation.

Location & timeframe

The volunteer will serve in the home of the students. Volunteer shifts will take place in the afternoons/evenings or weekends when students are not in school. 6 month commitment required
