Are you a good listener and 60 or older? Are you compassionate? Do you like helping others? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Peer Counseling might be for you. Peer Counselors provide a wonderful, rewarding service as supportive counselors to older adults in senior centers in Delaware County! This is a supportive role, not a professional therapist position however we welcome retired social workers, therapists and psychologists. After completing a training program, peer counselors are placed in a local senior center. The following issues are ones that peer counselors are trained to deal with: loneliness, grief and loss, life changes, health issues, interpersonal concerns, caregiving, etc. Peer counselors talk with seniors one on one and also co-lead group discussions. Ongoing training and close supervision are provided for all peer counselors. Since Peer Counselors are not expected to do professional counseling, volunteers are not required to have a counseling background! Not sure if Peer Counseling is for you - all you need is a willing heart, a listening ear and a desire to help people!

Position is especially ideal for retired human service professionals, i.e. social workers, psychologists and others in the helping field!
