Volunteer and Make a Difference. Get Kids Ready for a Coding Revolution!
The San José Public Library and the City of San José are proud to present the Coding5K Challenge to
further enhance access and opportunities for FREE, quality STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Arts & Math) learning programs.
How You Will Make a Difference Make a difference by volunteering to lead a series of coding workshops using a provided curriculum.
You will be an important part of enhancing the library's ability to offer quality STEAM programming to students.
Typical day as a Volunteer Volunteers are needed to:
- Facilitate a class using provided curriculum of your choice and instructional resources
- Communicate with the Coding 5K Champion regarding program needs, including technology needs
- Collaborate to offer suggestions in achieving the best learning outcomes for all students
- Encourage lifelong learning to STEAM fields
- Connect with your community and provide a desired service
- Empower the youth to pursue a career in the STEAM field
- Share or gain experience with instructional skills for STEAM Classes
- Develop mentoring skills and become a positive role model to underprivileged youth
- Join forces with other community volunteers
Willingness to volunteer at least once a week for the duration of the curriculum selected. Class times can be scheduled when volunteer is available but typically last 1 hour weekly.
As a Coding 5K Program Leader, you can teach students valuable coding skills to help them prepare for a
successful future. We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers that can interact with local youth and

Description
Hillview Branch Library is located in East San Jose, near the Story and King intersection. We are located right next door to Fischer Middle School and have a rambunctous, lively crew of students who frequent the library. We serve a diverse, vibrant community of all ages, many of whom are native Spanish and Vietnamese speakers. Some of our popular activities include our storytimes, ESL Conversation Club, citizenship programs, and special holiday celebrations like our Halloween party and Posadas with Santa. We have a computer area for teens, children and adults and a mixed-age area; we also have 20 laptops that the public can check out and which we also use for programs. The library has two study rooms that the public can reserve and a beautiful community room with a projector and built-in sound system that is available to rent for free, open community activities. In addition, our library features a classroom space in our Family Learning Center and a separate office for virtual programs.
Public libraries in California seek to engage the talents, skills and commitment of volunteers to serve the communities’ information and literacy needs. Libraries offer a variety of skilled volunteer opportunities to make a meaningful contribution to library programs, operations, fundraising events and other community engagement functions. Skilled volunteers have opportunities to lead projects, work with teams of staff and volunteers, learn new skills, and have fun.
