Have you been looking for a way to make a big difference in a small amount of time? Consider volunteering with Science is Elementary (SiE) at Roses in Concrete.

Science is Elementary seeks to effect systemic change in elementary science education and wants all children realize science is awesome and use its principles to better their lives. Roses in Concrete is an amazing community school that serves children in East Oakland. They provide social services to families and a loving, arts-rich experience for students.

SiE and Roses in Concrete are partnering to provide engaging, hands-on science lessons this spring. In order for students to have individualized attention and establish mentor relationships we need STEM professionals to volunteer with us. We are especially hoping for people of color to volunteer so that students experience role models reflecting the community, and all are welcome. It's a minimal time commitment - 2 hours a month from Feb-May 2018. You'll learn, you'll experience joy, and you'll make a difference in the lives of some amazing students.

About Science is Elementary

Location:

Mission Statement

We provide inspiring, innovative, high-quality science experiences to the preschool and elementary school children who need them most.

Description

Leveraging children's inherent curiosity through hands-on experiments, in small groups, guided by scientist and engineer volunteers

Science education must be relevant, exciting, and experiential. We leverage the natural curiosity and creativity of elementary school-aged children.

Volunteer groups of engineers and scientists (1 adult per 8 children) bring "cool" hands-on experiments to the classroom and allow children to explore on their own while asking directed questions to guide their thought processes and investigations. Experiments draw on children's everyday experiences to show them that science is all around them and is fun.
