Project Open Hand’s mission is to nourish and engage our community by providing "meals with love" to the sick and the elderly. Help keep our organization running smoothly by volunteering your administrative skills!

Working alongside the Human Resources Team, the administrative support volunteer performs basic administrative tasks including greeting guests, answering phone calls and emails, giving routine information, performing light office duties and conveying a professional, friendly and competent demeanor to all callers and the general public on an as needed basis.

This is a great opportunity for current or retired professionals to contribute their administrative abilities to a nonprofit organization, and for students to develop office skills for college credit!

Specific Duties:

  • Receives incoming telephone calls, directs calls to appropriate parties, takes messages and answers general inquiries in a professional, friendly and competent manner
  • Receives and directs approved visitors to the appropriate offices or meeting rooms
  • Responds to general info email inbox, routes faxes, sorts mail, creates employee badges, organizes sealed paychecks, assists with employee recognition preparation
  • Enters data and tracking information into spreadsheets for staff training attendance or similar projects
  • Organizes and sorts invoices or similar documents by alpha or date, then files and creates labels
  • Completes special projects for agency departments
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • At least 16 years of age.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Capable of sitting for long periods.
  • Basic phone and computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel)
  • Works well with others and comfortable interacting with culturally diverse individuals.
  • Capable of discretion.
  • Must be willing to commit to 6 months.
  • TB test required

Time Commitment

3-5 hours per week, between 9:00 am - 5:00 pm, M-F

Mission Statement

Project Open Hand provides food and nourishment to improve the quality of life for the men, women and children it serves. Project Open Hand programs include: meal, grocery and nutrition counseling for people with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; congregate lunch and nutrition education for people over 60 years of age; meal service for homebound and critically ill people under the age of 60. Services are available to eligible clients living in San Francisco and Alameda counties.

Founded in 1985, Project Open Hand is a nonprofit organization that provides meals with love to critically ill neighbors and seniors. Our food is like medicine, helping clients recover from illness, get stronger, and lead healthier lives.

Every day, we prepare 2,500 nutritious meals and provide 200 bags of healthy groceries to help sustain our clients as they battle serious illnesses, isolation, or the health challenges of aging. We serve San Francisco and Oakland, engaging more than 125 volunteers daily to nourish our community.
