Through the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival, JSO provides a uniquely large performance venue for local artists allowing them the opportunity to reach a broader audience than other performance or promotional opportunities in the area provide for local performers. By offering an experience of live jazz, this one event stimulates interest in the jazz scene within the community. We strive to maintain the momentum of this event all year long through recurring hosted events at local venues that highlight local talent. We also leverage our marketing and promotional resources to increase audience awareness of the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival and all JSO-hosted events all year long.
In 2013, the JSO became the owner and producer of the Cathedral Park Jazz Festival (CPJF) which was founded in 1980 by the prior producer. 2018 marks the festival’s 38th year making it the longest-running FREE jazz festival west of the Mississippi River, and the longest-running neighborhood event in Portland. This past year the festival was held July 14-16,2017. During the 2017 event, 14 acts were presented including approximately 100 musicians. Over 10,000 people attended with music on Friday night (5pm-10pm), Saturday (1pm-10pm), and Sunday (1pm-8pm).
