POSITION SUMMARY
Communications volunteers act as the eyes and ears of the Alzheimer’s Association, monitoring local news outlets for opportunities to engage the media in telling stories or sharing information related to the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association. They will develop and maintain a list of media outlets and create relationships with these contacts.
Communications volunteers are needed throughout the 10 county area that the Greater North Valley office serves: Butte, Glenn, Tehama, Lassen, Plumas, Yuba, Sutter, Colusa, Shasta, and Siskiyou counties.
PURPOSE
Create awareness of Alzheimer’s Association programs and services with the public
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Media Monitoring
- Read at least 1 local paper, at least weekly and preferably daily, to identify topics that relate to the Alzheimer’s Association mission
- Monitor other local media (broadcast, internet, social) and identify opportunities to engage
- Identify local media members who report on dementia, healthcare, and other relevant topics
- Media Outreach
- Under direction of office staff, reach out to local reporters with news and information
- Write or coordinate others to write Letters to the Editor
- Assist with placement of calendar items
- Reporting
- Keep office staff apprised of opportunities as they emerge
QUALIFICATIONS
- Strong communication skills, written and verbal
- Comfortable speaking with the public
- Basic understanding of Alzheimer’s Association mission, programs, and services
- Punctual and dependable
- Positive, team-oriented attitude
- Support the mission of the Alzheimer’s Association
- Working knowledge of computers and the internet
- Ability to work with diverse communities and demonstrate inclusion
- Previous experience in Communications preferred, but not required
TIME COMMITMENT
- One 2-4 hour shift weekly
- Projects may be completed remotely
- A commitment of 1 year is expected
TRAINING
- Overview of the Alzheimer’s Association mission, services, and programs, Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, as well as outreach practices will be provided
- Ongoing supervision from office staff

BACKGROUND CHECK
Interns, volunteers and contractors are required to pass a background check before work commences. The Alzheimer’s Association believes that engaging qualified individuals in our mission contributes to the overall strategic success of the organization.
