Dr. Seuss Day

In the words of Dr. Seuss, "You're off to Great Places! Today is your day! Your mountain is waiting, So... get on your way!"

Dr. Seuss epitomizes a love of learning. By reading to children on his birthday - or any day -- we send a clear message that reading is fun and important. You can volunteer to read with children any day of the year, why not start today?! .

Held annually in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday on March 2nd, Read Across America Day is part of the National Education Association’s program to motivate children and teens to read. It also is a great opportunity to mobilize volunteer readers, tutors and mentors to improve education and increase the high school graduation rate.

At Birney Elementary, we kick off our celebration with a Big Family breakfast where families come together for breakfast (provided by Panera Bread) with their children and each other. As families finish breakfast, they are encouraged to take part in different activities centered around literacy. Once the school day has started, volunteers from the community come in and read their favorite book to a class/grade level of their choosing. If you don't have a book, we have plenty to choose from! Pastries and beverages will be provided to our volunteers. We hope you can come share the love of reading with our students!
