Mission Statement
The Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC) is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds. Lake ecosystems include the physical, biogeochemical and human environments, and the interactions among them. The Center is committed to providing objective scientific information for restoration and sustainable use of the Lake Tahoe Basin.
Description
The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center (TERC), formerly called the Tahoe Research Group, has been serving the Lake Tahoe and Truckee region with important research and outreach on environmental issues since 1968. Dr. Charles R. Goldman led these early efforts and through his outreach increased community awareness of the steady loss of water clarity in Lake Tahoe. TERC is dedicated to research, education and public outreach on lakes and their surrounding watersheds and airsheds.
The UC Davis Tahoe Science Center includes exhibits about scientific research at Lake Tahoe and provides an entertaining educational experience for residents, visitors and students to learn about the local environment and environmental issues.
We currently provide tours for student groups, residents and visitors to the region, as well as host a monthly lecture series and various workshops and conferences. Informal lectures have been given to diverse audiences including students groups, college classes, Dean's Future Scholars, local community organizations, local nonprofit groups, local government agency officials, state and federal dignitaries, and youth groups such as the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Additionally, we offer a 15-week afterschool science program to high school students, called the Youth Science Institute. Our popular programs are increasingly gaining recognition, growing in size and number, and providing the north shore of Lake Tahoe with important educational services in addition to the research services we are known for.
