ORGANIZATION: Bike East Bay

Role

Bike East Bay seeks an enthusiastic Advocacy Intern to expand our bikeway campaign capacity in the months leading up to Bike to Work Day. This individual will gain firsthand experience in grassroots organizing and field coordination of local bicycle advocacy efforts, as well as have opportunities to collaborate directly with city and agency staff who work on transportation projects. Success in this role will require organizational skills, successful coordination with our Bike to Work Day partners and confidence when speaking with community members visiting the new bikeways.

A strong Advocacy Intern will demonstrate professionalism, organizational skills, and enthusiasm when talking about bikeway projects with members of the public.

The hours for this internship are 6-10 hours per week and we seek a 10 week commitment starting March 5. Must be available on Bike to Work Day, Thursday, May 10. This is a paid internship with a stipend of $1,200.

Sample Duties:

  • Work with Bike East Bay advocacy staff on campaigns to be featured on Bike to Work Day
  • Assist with new bikeway ribbon cuttings leading up to Bike to Work Day
  • Coordinate Bike to Work Day rides/activities involving elected officials
  • Prepare advocacy materials and work with volunteers for Bike to Work Day energizer stations at locations on campaign streets
  • Conduct streetside outreach activities leading up to Bike to Work Day
Skills and Knowledge to be Gained:
  • grassroots organizing and field coordination experience applicable to many different campaigns
  • experience working with city staff, transit agency staff and elected officials on progressive bike infrastructure
  • experience working with a growing, effective non-profit organization that is part of a significant change taking place in America as more people find betters ways to commute
  • Academic credit, by working with your academic institution’s internship program
Requirements:
  • confident and professional communication skills
  • strong organizing skills, including working with databases, task management, scheduling events/meetings, following up with partners and volunteers
  • Attention to details organizing events and following up with volunteers
  • basic knowledge of various bicycle facilities found in the cities of the East Bay and in other bike-friendly cities around the country
  • ability to travel to various cities in the East Bay by bike and by transit
  • Outgoing, dynamic, and flexible personality
Helpful:
  • social media experience
  • familiarity with the geography (actual and political) in the East Bay
  • experience with Bike to Work Day
