Are you interested in making a difference in the Staten Island community? Would you like to be equipped with the crisis intervention and advocacy skills to empower survivors as they walk through the immediate aftermath of trauma? Are you passionate, dedicated, and responsible? If so, you should consider joining our team of certified Rape Crisis Advocates.

Safe Horizon, the nation's leading victim services agency, is recruiting Rape Survivor Advocates to undergo a 40-hour training through our Staten Island Community Program.

Program Description:

Volunteers attend a 40-hour comprehensive training at Safe Horizon office in Staten Island in February 2018. The comprehensive training provides a deep contextual understanding of rape and sexual assault and educates on trauma-informed practices to best serve a survivor. Upon completion, volunteers become advocates who respond to local hospital emergency departments when a rape or sexual assault has occurred.



Responsibilities:

The following services are provided, but not limited to:

-Immediate emotional support for survivors and secondary survivors

-An explanation of medical procedures

-Attendance during the medical exam and the collection for the Forensic Rape Examination (FRE)

-Acting as a liaison and advocate with hospital staff and criminal justice personnel on behalf of the survivor

-Information and referrals, including follow-up care with the Safe Horizon Rape Crisis Program

-Providing clothing/undergarments, personal hygiene articles and transportation

-Bi-monthly supervision and training to stay abreast of latest medical/legal practices and a community of peer support


Further Considerations

Volunteers must be 18 or over

Volunteers must have access to adequate transportation in order to respond in a timely fashion-
MUST LIVE ON STATEN ISLAND.


Commitment
-Attend a 40-hour comprehensive training from February to March 2018. some weekend days required.
-Volunteer Hours: On-call Sunday-Thursday 5 PM-9 AM or Friday and Saturdays 5PM- 5PM (24 hours shifts).
-We generally request three shifts a month.
-A year-long commitment is required however, a longer commitment is preferred.
