INTRO: Would you like to help on an organic farm in the middle of the Costa Rican jungle? Are you interested in sustainability and organic food? Then our sustainable farming project is ideal for you!

DETAILS: As a volunteer on the project, you will learn about the organic farming processes the farm uses, and help with planting, maintaining and harvesting crops. You’ll also closely work with the farm’s horses, and be able to ride them frequently. The farm also has other animals: cows and pigs. You’ll learn how to prepare healthy meals with produce from the farm. You will also learn how to make cacao and cheese from scratch! The "host mum" Teresa is a specialist in medicinal plant medicine - and she has a garden full of important plants. If you’re interested and speak a little Spanish you can learn a lot from her about the medicinal plants and their uses.

VOLUNTEER DUTIES:

  • Help to plant, maintain and harvest crops (depending on the season)
  • Help to maintain the farm, cleaning, and attending to the animals
  • Help milk cows and make cheese
  • Help to move wood/ trees
  • Helping with the horses and other farm animals
  • Work on the medicinal herb garden
  • Help with meal preparations together with you farmer family
  • Be proactive and contribute your own ideas to make agricultural processes more sustainable and organic.

QUALIFICATIONS: An ideal volunteer on this project has a passion for the environment and agriculture. Also, the volunteer has to enjoy physical labor and being outside. Volunteers need to be flexible and proactive who do not mind to get their hands dirty and put their own ideas into practice. You should be 18 years of age or older to participate. You should speak some Spanish (at least beginner level) as the family does not speak English.

DATES: This project is offered year around.

LOCATION: The project is located on the Osa Peninsula of Costa Rica. To get there you’ll spend the first and last night in Puerto Jimenez, in the family’s "town house". From Puerto Jimenez it’s another 1 ½ hours bus ride towards Carate, and then another hour on horseback ride to the farm.

QUALIFICATIONS: This project is for volunteers who don’t mind to get their hands dirty and put their own ideas into practice. An ideal volunteer on this project has a passion for the environment and agriculture, and enjoys physical labor and being outdoors! You don’t need a degree for this project. You can volunteer on this project if you’re 18 years of age or older. A beginner level of Spanish would be an advantage because the host family does not speak English.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD: You’ll live in the farm house together with the family. You’ll have your own private room, or potentially share a room with another volunteer. The family will prepare 3 meals for you a day, and often there is "tea-coffee" times throughout the day too. You won’t be hungry! Meals are prepared with fresh produce and meat / cheese from the farm. Only a very small portion comes from the supermarket. You’ll usually eat breakfast at around 6am, lunch around 12pm, and dinner around 6pm.

Mission Statement

Green Life Volunteers is a local Costa Rican Volunteer Service Organization. We place volunteers in different projects throughout Costa Rica. Most of these projects are run by other non-profit organizations - and we provide them with "man-power", know-how, and donations. We particularly try to focus on conservation and development projects - and we place volunteers on projects which focus on research and protection of endangered species, such as sea turtles and monkeys! We also hope to improve sustainability and positive development in small communities of Costa Rica, by helping kids and adults to learn English (and other languages), and by promoting organic farming and reforestation!
