The City Tutors (CT) is looking for tutors to provide academic support for an Intermediate Microeconomics course for the Spring 2020 semester. The class covers forces determining product and factor prices and quantities under alternative market structures. Consumer demand, production, and cost; firm and industry. Tutors will create videos to supplement material learned in class or from the course readings, and may hold live study group sessions online outside of the class.

This is a great opportunity for students who are majoring (or have already earned a degree) in the course area to enhance their knowledge and experience and who are interested in tutoring. In this role, you would collaborate with an instructor to improve students’ performance while being supported and guided by an experienced academic support professional.

All tutors supporting economics classes are expected to commit a minimum of two hours availability each week to support students having difficulty with the material. You would work with students who are struggling, as well as designing videos or assignments, and create differentiated instruction as the need arises. You will be supported throughout this process by the City Tutors staff. Tutors providing virtual support outside of the class also need to maintain a reliable internet connection in a relatively quiet space for a minimum of 1 hour sessions.

All tutors are also expected to complete a four session comprehensive, professional training regimen. 6 hours of live training, plus another hour and a half for orientation. This is a commitment of 7.5 hours of in person training, and 4 hours of supplemental training for a total of 11.5 hours of training over the course of the Spring semester.

Training days will be determined based on your schedule and that of the Tutor Training Coordinators.

CT's tutoring program has been successful in helping students gain access to support that they otherwise would not have received, given their limited time spent on campus. Having a tutor in the class early in the semester will allow us to employ strategies to reduce withdrawals and student failure rates. Your work with us would help the students’ overall subject area performance, and help us improve this educational support model, reaching more students and departments with comprehensive academic support.

To apply, you must:

  1. Have received an A- or A in Economics courses
  2. Have a GPA at or above 3.2, or have completed a degree program
  3. Submit monthly reports, keep a log sheet of any tutoring appointments done outside of class, and regularly communicate with the tutor training coordinator.

Mission Statement

The City Tutors (CT) is a NYC wide volunteer tutoring and mentoring hub that ensures historically underserved communities have equitable access to resources that are fundamental to educational and professional success.

Description

Our vision is to create a hub where any New Yorker can leverage their academic and professional skills and content knowledge to uplift their community and where disadvantaged communities can access resources that they need.

We see tutoring as a way to empower individuals to work in the community. We provide flexible times, convenient locations, and meaningful experiences, allowing more community members to participate and to support community partners for longer.

We believe tutoring must be a reflective act that both helps strengthen individuals' support of others and helps individuals better understand themselves. We provide our tutors with access to industry mentors who help connect the work they are doing with us with what they've done in the past and what they want to do in the future.

We believe in leveraging the workforce skills of our community of volunteers by pairing those in need of professional support with industry experts who can provide insight into specific fields and feedback on professional documents.

We see the City Tutors as an opportunity to bring people together under a common purpose. We want like-minded individuals to feel they are part of a fellowship, to build their network with people within their discipline, and to expand the disciplines and industries they've been exposed to.
