EVENT DETAILS:

Through the Healthy Athletes(r) program, Special Olympics Colorado athletes receive free screenings in a fun, welcoming environment that removes the anxiety and fear individuals with ID often experience when faced with a visit to the doctor or dentist. Our mission is to improve each athlete’s health and fitness, leading to enhanced sports experience and improved well-being.

With your help at Winter Games, we will be able to screen athletes competing in alpine skiing, snowboarding, cross-country, snowshoeing, figure and speed skating.

We will be hosting two screenings, Special Smiles and Fit Feet!

The Special Smiles discipline of Healthy Athletes provides comprehensive oral health care information, including offering free dental screenings and instructions on correct brushing and flossing techniques to participating Special Olympics athletes.

Through Fit Feet’s free podiatric screening, the athletes will have their ankles, feet, lower extremity biomechanics, and proper shoe and sock gear evaluated. Fit Feet also provides referrals to athletes who require follow up services.

CHECK-IN: Volunteer check in will be from 12:00am -12:30am. There will be an orientation starting promptly at 12:30pm, so please allow yourself time to park and check-in.

WHAT TO WEAR: Each volunteer will receive a Healthy Athletes t-shirt to wear at the event, so you will be easily identifiable. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and avoid sweatpants. Due to the potential icy conditions of the parking lots and sidewalks, please wear safe and appropriate footwear.

PARKING: Parking vouchers will be provided by Special Olympics. A map will be sent out before the event illustrating parking lot options.

MEALS: Lunch will be provided.

CONTINUING EDUCATION HOURS: Hours provided conducting our Special Smiles screening are eligible for continuing education hours. Special Olympics Colorado will provide certificates upon completion.

About Special Olympics Colorado

Location:

Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics was founded in 1969 on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Special Olympics also believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.
