EVENT DETAILS:

Through the Healthy Athletes(r) program, Special Olympics Colorado athletes receive free screenings in a fun, welcoming environment that removes the anxiety and fear individuals with ID often experience when faced with a visit to the doctor or dentist. Our mission is to improve each athlete’s health and fitness, leading to enhanced sports experience and improved well-being.

During our Denver Regional Basketball Tournament 45-50 teams (both traditional and unified) will be competing and will have the opportunity to go through our Fit Feet screening.

Fit Feet offers podiatric screenings to evaluate ankles, feet, lower extremity biomechanics, and proper shoe and sock gear to athletes.

Fit Feet examinations have found that a large percentage of Special Olympics athletes have untreated foot conditions.

* 50% have gait abnormalities

* 53% have skin and nail problems

* 21% have bone deformations

* 41% of Special Olympics athletes in the U.S. are wearing the wrong size shoe

Imagine how many of these preventable or treatable foot conditions are unknowingly affecting the athlete’s sports participation and performance! To alleviate these problems, volunteer foot specialists work with athletes to evaluate problems of the feet, ankles and lower extremity biomechanics and work with the athlete, under the supervision of a Clinical Director, to set up follow up care when necessary.

CHECK-IN: Volunteer check in will be from 10:00am -10:30am. There will be an orientation starting promptly at 10:30am, so please allow yourself time to park and check-in.

WHAT TO WEAR: Each volunteer will receive a Healthy Athletes t-shirt to wear at the event, so you will be easily identifiable. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes, and avoid sweatpants.

PARKING: Free parking is available and a map will be sent out the week prior to the event.

MEALS: Lunch will be provided.

Mission Statement

The mission of Special Olympics Colorado (SOCO) is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendships with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Description

Special Olympics was founded in 1969 on the belief that people with intellectual disabilities can, with proper instruction and encouragement, learn, enjoy and benefit from participation in individual and team sports. Special Olympics believes that consistent training is essential to the development of sports skills, and that competition among those of equal abilities is the most appropriate means of testing these skills, measuring progress and providing incentives for personal growth. Special Olympics also believes that through sports training and competition, people with intellectual disabilities benefit physically, mentally, socially and spiritually; families are strengthened; and the community at large, both through participation and observation, is united in understanding people with intellectual disabilities in an environment of equality, respect and acceptance.
