The Apple Valley Food Shelf, located in Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church (near the MN Zoo) serves as an open, welcoming place for community members to gather, work with volunteers and receive needed food support. Volunteers build trusting relationships with individuals and families giving them dignity as they access the food shelf.

Depending on the volunteer role, our volunteers: greet clients, meet with clients when they come for food shelf appointments, update client information in our database, connect clients to resources, stock or organize the Food Shelf and help clients as they shop in the Food Shelf. Training for all volunteer positions is provided. We ask volunteers to be willing to commit to a minimum of two four hour shifts per month on an ongoing basis.

Volunteer opportunities:

We are looking for volunteers who are able to commit to two shifts per month to fill one of the following needs:

Food Shelf Volunteer - Stock and organize the shelves and assist clients as they shop in the Food Shelf, weigh outgoing food and help load food into client’s vehicle. We ask volunteers to be willing to commit to a minimum of two 3 ½ hour shifts each month. Volunteers must be able to lift approximately 25 pounds.

Available shifts:
  • Monday 9:30 am to 1 pm, at least 2x a month

Our food shelf is always in need of paper and/or plastic grocery bags. Please feel free to drop off any gently used and clean bags on Tuesdays and Thursdays from noon - 6 pm to the food shelf located at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, 12650 Johnny Cake Ridge Road, Apple Valley.
