ORGANIZATION: Food Bank of Iowa

Food Bank of Iowa logo

The Food Bank of Iowa has opened a Food Pantry onsite! We need your help to serve community members and better understand the 500+ partner agencies that we serve. This choice pantry will offer food items to families in our neighborhood and an opportunity to serve the 1 in 8 Iowans currently in need.

Spend Tuesday evenings making a big impact!

Role: Assist community members shopping in the food pantry, filling out profiles as a new shopper, and providing additional support such as bus schedules and brochures with information on other benefits.

Commitment: We can accept volunteers as they are available for one time opportunities! We do also have a huge need volunteers that are able to commit to a weekly shift and willing to cross train to assist clients from welcome to departure at the pantry.

Tuesdays: 3:30pm-7:30pm

Requirements:
Volunteers must be aged 16 or older to volunteer in the pantry. Please note that for some of the roles in the pantry we do need a volunteer to be willing to commit to a weekly shift for training. Training will occur before your first shift and a Food Bank of Iowa staff member will be onsite to assist with any questions for all pantry shifts.

Mission Statement

The Food Bank of Iowa is a charitable, not-for-profit organization committed to our mission of alleviating hunger through food distribution, partnership and education.

Description

From the time the dock doors opened in 1982, we have maintained our No. 1 priority - maximizing "food in - food out" to meet the critical needs of a diverse population through our network of partner agencies in 55 Iowa counties.

As a non-profit food bank, our primary role is to provide food to the charitable agencies offering direct service to hungry Iowans.

These partner agencies include:

  • Food pantries
  • Soup kitchens
  • Homeless shelters
  • Shelters for victims of domestic violence
  • Nonprofit day care centers
  • Residential care centers
  • Child and senior programs

Along with traditional food banking, the Food Bank of Iowa also operates three successful programs: Backpack Buddies, HUSH and the Fresh Produce Project.
