Bud, Not Buddy

Would you be interested in volunteering as an usher for a new play by Metro Theater Company at the Grandel Theater? Support quality family-friendly theater that that Metro brings to St. Louis with their mission of helping to help build inclusive communities and social justice. Not only can you support them in their worthy mission, you also get to stay and see the play for free! The beautiful historic Grandel Theater is at 3610 Grandel Sq. at Grand Blvd, in the Grand Center Arts District.

The performance coming up is Bud, Not Buddy. Based on the Newbery Medal and Coretta Scott King Award-winning novel, this play combines actors with a 13-piece jazz band performing an original score composed by five-time, Grammy-winning jazz artist Terence Blanchard to tell the story of a boy who finds a home and a passion for music. Bud, Not Buddy is perfect for the whole family! This play will be performing in February to school groups (Tuesdays-Fridays at 10am) and weekend public performances (Fridays & Saturdays at 7pm, Sundays at 2pm).

Metro Theater Company’s plays are for people of all ages and capacities. They offer weekend public performances, but also work with schools to bring students in by bus during selected weekdays to foster learning through this exciting arts approach. Before and after the student shows, Metro Theater Company offers Educator Guides for teachers, and after the performances the teaching artists visit the schools for further dialogue with students on the important conversations that emerge from the plays.

You can read more about Bud, Not Buddy and dates for performances at our website: http://metroplays.org

A number of ushers are needed for each performance. After ushering, you may take a seat and see the performance for free. Your duties would include arriving one hour before the performance begins, and:

  • As an usher for a student week day performance, you would assist by shepherding students safely into theater from their school buses, through the lobby and into their seats.
  • As an usher for a public performance in a weekend evening or a matinee, you would assist by ticket scanning, playbill distribution, and directing people to their specific seats.

VALUES

Because we respect the intelligence and emotional wisdom of young people, we produce theater that touches the heart, delights the senses, and stimulates the mind.

Because we believe young people deserve the finest art we can create for them, we honor and support the professional artists who do the work of our mission.

Because we appreciate how the arts celebrate our differences and cultivate common ground, we create a welcoming environment for all people in all our work.

Because we embrace creative risk-taking, we are committed to the development and production of new plays.

Because we understand that learning through the arts inspires joy, opens doors to self-discovery, and builds bridges to lifelong learning, we design and teach educational programs for young people and adults.

Because we believe all young people deserve access to the arts, we take our programs to diverse settings throughout the St. Louis region.

Because we choose to remain focused on our mission and purpose, we forge partnerships with schools, organizations, and institutions to serve our community effectively.
