What is Spoons Across America? Spoons Across America (SAA) is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating children, teachers, and families about the benefits of healthy eating though food and nutrition-based educational programs for children.

What is Agriculture Literacy Week? Spoons Across America is the primary New York City implementer of Cornell Cooperative Extension’s New York Agriculture Literacy Week. In this free program for New York City schools, 1st and 2nd graders learn about New York state agriculture - what kinds of food are grown and produced in the state, and the people who are involved in growing and producing them. Spoons Across America trains volunteers to read a selected storybook and lead a related curriculum activity.

Between March 12 and April 25, 2018, volunteers will read Before We Eat: From Farm to Table by Pat Brisson. Students will be taken on the journey from farm to table to understand different aspects of agriculture and the many possible careers involved. This is a captivating glimpse of what it takes to bring the food we eat to us in order to nourish our bodies and spirits.

What do Volunteers do? After participating in a hands-on training, volunteers participate in and lead all aspects of Agriculture Literacy Week implementation. Volunteer responsibilities include reading the Agriculture Literacy Week book aloud to the class, leading an activity related to the book, and set up and clean up. We are looking for individuals enthusiastic about healthy eating and children’s programming to join us!

Mission Statement

Spoons Across America, the recipe for healthier children, is a 501 (c)(3) not-for-profit organization dedicated to educating children, teachers, and families about the benefits of healthy eating. We work to influence the eating habits of children through hands-on education that celebrates the connection to local farmers and the important tradition of sharing meals around the family table.

Description

At Spoons Across America, we believe the best approach to good nutrition is to encourage children to lift up their spoons, excite all their senses, and taste new healthy foods. Our programs actively engage children to use all of their senses through hands-on experience and direct observation ‒ appearance, texture, scent, and taste. Through our programs, children become independent and inquisitive taste-explorers.

Spoons Across America strives to improve children’s relationship with food and help them understand the long-term benefits of healthy eating. Through our nutrition-based programs, children develop a healthy food curiosity that has a lasting impact throughout their lives.

Spoons Across America’s comprehensive and progressive approach to food and nutrition education in public schools begins in 2nd grade and continues until children graduate from elementary school in 5th grade. Children participating in our programs have educational experiences around food, tasting, nutrition and health that are developmentally appropriate and build upon previous concepts and experiences. All of our programs are hands on and exploratory based, as well as including opportunities for writing and drawing, and contain take home materials for families with recipes, related activities, and opportunities for further discovery.
