ROOTS Young Adult Shelter is located in the University District just off the Ave. With 45 beds, we are the largest homeless youth shelter in Washington and work with young adults, 18-25 years old, 365 days a year! Forty percent of youth experiencing homelessness identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, queer or asexual (LGBTQQA), even though only seven percent of the youth population as a whole identifies as LGBTQQA. Once out of their homes they are at greater risk for victimization than their non-LGBTQQA peers. ROOTS Young Adult shelter is working to create a safe space for these young adults.
Volunteers are needed to help with preparing and serving dinner, handing out supplies, and most importantly, building meaningful relationships with the folks who stay here. This is a great chance to make a visible impact in the lives of the people we serve, and be part of a wonderful volunteer community.
