ORGANIZATION: Goodman Community Center

Join us at the Food For Thought Initiative to help support community food pantries in our locals schools as they work to provide healthy food to students living in food insecurity.

The Food for Thought Initiative is a partner organization with Goodman Community Center that aims to improve food access and alleviate hunger among Madison area school students and their families. They have set up food pantry's at East High school, Sandburg Elementary, and Mendota Elementary schools to provide students with access to food as well as run "Thea's Table" a program providing food to the neediest students in the district by sending home weekend and holiday family meals.

We are looking for volunteers to join our volunteer rotation and to help fill in when regular volunteers have to miss a shift. These are flexible opportunities where we are looking for volunteers who can be available to help at least once per month. We're looking for people available on Tues and/or Thurs.

Tuesday possible tasks include helping pick up food donations from Second Harvest or shopping at Woodman's and delivering food to Mendota School and assisting with sorting and shelving food. Timing differs depending on task, but tends to be 1.5-2 hours between 10am and 2pm.

Thursdays volunteers would be driving and delivering food bags to several school (mostly on East side of Madison) from 11am-12:30pm

Volunteers should be able to lift at least 15lbs and have access to their own car.

* Regular ongoing positions available as well

Description

The Goodman Community Center is not your average community center. As I get to talking with people about Goodman, they inevitably end up surprised. They’re surprised by how many programs and resources we offer, how beautiful our facilities are, or how many people we serve. Every year more than 30,000 people use the Center - some who come to one event, others who are very familiar faces here.

Thanks to our generous community, we just built and moved into a second beautiful facility across the street, the Brassworks building. We’re now reconfiguring and refreshing the Center’s first home on Waubesa Street, the Ironworks building. During this past ten years, we’ve nearly doubled in size.

Our staff are committed to learning and continually improving, too. That’s why each program uses a variety of tools to measure impacts for both the program overall, and for each individual participant. We use that data to constantly fine-tune what we do - and how we do it.

We’re glad Goodman is one of many organizations in the Madison area who are pouring themselves into making our community great - for us all. We hope you’ll join us. Because we know that every good thing that happens here is made possible by people like you.
