Arapahoe Philharmonic - the orchestra

The Arapahoe Philharmonic, a community-based orchestra in Littleton, is seeking qualified applicants to serve as board members to join a dedicated team in the oversight and policy-making of a local cultural institution. Qualified individuals will have an appreciation for classical music, a commitment to music education and some understanding of the Denver area cultural scene, as well as professional experience in leadership, nonprofit administration, fundraising, marketing, strategic planning, law, finance, human resources, arts education, information technology and/or project management.

Board members serve 3-year terms and may serve two consecutive terms (six years) at which time a one-year break is required prior to resuming a board role. Board members direct the oversight, policy and fiscal accountability of the organization and have the opportunity to lead projects and head committees tasked with strategic goal accomplishments. There is a $500 minimum donation to serve on the board. Alternative avenues of service in lieu of a financial contribution can be discussed. The board meets monthly, with committee meetings, additional meetings or retreats scheduled as needed.

The Arapahoe Philharmonic has provided high quality classical music experiences to the south metro Denver community for 64 years. The orchestra comprises mostly volunteer musicians - doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers - playing for the love of music with a core of compensated principal players to provide technical leadership and help ensure the quality of performance.

Interested parties should contact the Arapahoe Philharmonic office at 303-781-1892 or erin@arapahoe-phil.org.

Mission Statement

The Arapahoe Philharmonic’s mission is to provide the highest degree of musical excellence and cultural enrichment for the citizens of the Denver metropolitan area and to create educational opportunities for youth promoting an interest in classical music.

Description

Founded in 1953, the Arapahoe Philharmonic is among the longest-established, continuously operating musical resources in Colorado. After thriving under two long-tenured conductors, T. Gordon Parks and Vincent C. LaGuardia, Jr., we celebrated our 60th anniversary season (2013-2014) with an exciting new conductor, Devin Patrick Hughes. The orchestra’s musicians are volunteers, playing for the love of music, with a core of compensated section principals who provide technical leadership and help ensure the excellence of performance.

Our performance repertoire includes the greatest names in classical music, ranging through centuries of master composers, as well as living composers. Our south Denver metro location allows music lovers to experience high quality performances at reasonable cost with a convenient commute from home and free parking.

In addition to our regular season performances, the Philharmonic is invested in future generations, presenting annual children’s concerts and sponsoring outreach to elementary, middle and high schools. Whether or not these young people choose a career in music, growing and working together toward the collective goal of a concert performance is important to their intellectual and emotional development. The Arapahoe Philharmonic also sponsors collegiate-level competitions for instrumental performance, conducting and competition.
