WHO WE ARE: Generation Citizen is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering young people as agents of political change in their own communities. This year, Generation Citizen and Encore.org are teaming up to bring the experience of people like you who have lived a full life of civic engagement to middle and high schoolers who are just getting started.
WHAT WE DO: We place volunteers - called "Democracy Coaches" - into local middle and high school classrooms, to help youth take action on a community issue of their choice. Classes have worked on issues ranging from affordable housing and neighborhood litter to public transit and school policy. Democracy Coaches commit to roughly 4 hours per week, including in-class support (1-2 hours/week), weekly check-in meetings with fellow volunteers (1 hour/week), and outside research support (1-2 hours/week).
WHEN: Democracy Coaches visit their classroom once or twice per week for a semester, teaching Generation Citizen's action civics curriculum. Volunteer placements are flexible and based on volunteers' schedules and location, and happen during the school day (8:00am - 4:00pm).
WHERE: Democracy Coaches will be matched with a 12th Grade classroom at Mills High School in Millbrae, CA.
WHO: Generation Citizen and Encore.org are looking for passionate community volunteers (age 50+) who believe we can strengthen our democracy by empowering young people to take real action in the political process. Volunteers need not have any political advocacy experience -- only an interest in learning alongside and supporting young emerging activists! Generation Citizen provides training and ongoing support throughout the semester.
WHY: Democracy Coach volunteers have the opportunity to gain exceptional experience in classroom teaching, community organizing, research and project management.
HOW: Learn more and apply online at www.generationcitizen.org. For more info, email Caitlin Paul, Program Director at cpaul@generationcitizen.org.

Description
Generation Citizen is a national civic-education organization working in the Bay Area. We place college student volunteers, called "Democracy Coaches," into middle- and high-school classrooms to teach an innovative action civics curriculum.
Throughout the course of a semester, students identify a community issue, then design and take action on a plan to address it. Past classrooms have focused on issues including gang violence, immigration, teen jobs, and health care. They have met with legislators, written op-eds, built partnerships with local organizations, and produced documentaries.
Generation Citizen Bay Area's college chapters currently include: San Francisco State University, University of San Francisco and University of California Berkeley.
