ORGANIZATION: Carnegie Science Center

Responsible To: Education Coordinator, Demonstration Theaters

Task Description: This Science Theaters Presenter Internship at Carnegie Science Center is a truly
unique experience. It provides the opportunity for students with various science interests to demonstrate their excitement for science while honing interpersonal and public speaking skills.

Responsibilities:
 Presenting science demonstrations to visitors of various ages in the Science Theaters;
preparing the materials, conducting the activities with visitors.
 Supervising and maintaining the prep rooms; maintain inventory of chemical supply
 Assisting theater presenters in preparing chemicals, props, equipment, and supplies for
science demonstration programs
 Conducting research in preparation for future science demonstration programs; must prepare
a final report and submit to Carnegie Science Center and Internship Advisor
 Mastering the presentation of three or more large-audience science demonstration programs
 Upholding our commitment to customer service, our mission to provide science education
and inspiration, and our commitment to respecting diversity

Skills Required:
 Ability to interact positively with visitors and other staff
 Willingness to learn new information; genuine interest in science
 Sense of humor, fun, enthusiastic, and energetic
 Excellent verbal skills; comfort with large audiences; actively seek participation
 Ability to lift 50 lbs. and be comfortable with heights
 Ability to follow explicit directions
 Ability to do independent research with materials provided, including the internet
 Reliability and punctuality
 Ability to work with chemicals and common cleaning supplies

Parameters:
 Not responsible for administering first aid or CPR
 Must attend all staff trainings as scheduled
 Must demonstrate proficiency in all areas before working independently including cryogenics
and flammables

Training Methods:
 Will shadow and observe shows
 Work closely with fully trained presenters, and the Education Coordinator

Time Frame:
 30 hours per week, including one weekend day
 Occasional evenings
