Teresa with Children

We need enthusiastic volunteers to help with our Children's enrichment program held on Wed/Sat/Sundays at the YMCA in Wayne NJ. While their parents work on learning English in a nearby classroom, help us with activities for the children across the hall. Sometimes we help children with homework, other times we grab a book and read together to work on English pronunciation and vocabulary. Sometimes we draw, or play games like "Simon Says" or "Guess Who" to both keep moving and work on our spoken English.

Volunteers need not commit to all 3 sessions, but volunteers must commit to at least 4 hours per week. You do not need to be a trained teacher to help. Kindness, a sense of humor, a commitment to cultural understanding and exchange is a good place to start. After one session we will ask any volunteers with direct contact with children to complete a background check.

Mission Statement

The mission of Global Emergency Response and Assistance is to protect human rights, and restore the dignity, well-being, and safety of those physically, emotionally, and mentally affected by conflicts. We provide aid and assistance to refugees, new arrivals in host countries, and internally displaced persons. By providing such individuals with immediate relief, supporting their resettlement process, and advocating for their rights, we help support the values of human dignity and human rights.

Description

GERA -- we build lasting relationships with individuals and families in need. We respond to their needs by connecting our newest residents with one another, offering language programs that lead to their social and economic independence, and advocating for their full participation in our communities. We understand that for vulnerable populations, reclaiming dignity and establishing economic independence are equally important outcomes. We’ve grown GERA from the ground up with an inspired team and expert advisors, and with your support, we look forward to reinforcing our programs and welcoming our newest neighbors.
