ORGANIZATION: Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center

Five to 10 percent of the general population suffers from communication-based disorders. Therapy is usually provided through school districts, unless the child is home-schooled or in a private school. However, many children in the school districts who need services actually do not score low enough to qualify for school services. That is when parents seek outside help - only to find that services are too expensive to continue paying for. We are a nonprofit clinic that serves children and adolescents with delays in speech, language, and reading - for free. We provide much-needed services for up to 2 years for each child or teenager. We also provide cutting-edge neuroplasticity programs not provided in the schools, the cost of which would be prohibitive for most families.

Recently, we have experienced the need to create a social media presence for the clinic and the children and families it serves so that we can broaden our donation base from being strictly Scottish Rite Mason-based to community-based. Funding through our Foundation has decreased significantly and we will need to raise $100,000 per year for the next few years to keep our doors open. In just the past 2 months, we raised over $20,000 through a matching fund campaign. We have two more events planned over February and March. These will become signature events that we will repeat each year.

The person to fill this position should have in-depth knowledge of social media platforms and how to promote a larger media presence for a nonprofit to increase donor knowledge, visibility, and contributions. It will require the creation of a multi-faceted campaign, and the scheduling of regular postings on several platforms (we currently just have a website and a Facebook page) including Twitter, Instagram, and any other platform that could be useful to our cause.

Mission Statement

The Oakland RiteCare Childhood Language Center's mission is to provide free speech, language, and reading therapy to children and young adults ages 3 to 20. We conduct evaluations, provide therapy and parent consultations, and use innovative neuroscience-based interventions to improve academic achievement and social development.

Description

Located on beautiful Lake Merritt, our center has 5 therapy rooms, a computer lab, and a play room, a lobby, and two bathrooms. We have a large parking lot. Our center team includes two dedicated and caring professionals - an educational therapist and a speech/language therapist - with a combined 30 years of experience and a talented and resourceful administrative assistant. We mostly conduct 1:1 50-minute sessions for traditional speech/language therapy and neuroplasticity programs such as Interactive Metronome and Fast ForWord. We also run small groups of 3-4 students to work on critical thinking skills critical for academic and daily life that focus on auditory processing, self-advocacy, and learning strategies. Our clinic board includes both Masons, parents, and community members. We also are dedicated to providing educational programs for parents and professionals regarding many aspects of special education through workshops in the beautiful Oakland Scottish Temple.
