Camp Hoop Heroes
Mentor participating in Hoop Hero team building activity

Camp Hoop Heroes (HH) is a part of After-School All-Stars Sports as a Hook (SAAH) program and is a free, week-long, intensive youth leadership and mentoring camp which leverages the game of basketball to provide students with mentors who educate them about high school, college and career opportunities. HH is a response to the need for young people have to connect with a caring adult in an authentic way as well as an opportunity to play. ASAS students often tell us that they sign up for the activities, but they stay for the caring adult relationships they develop with staff and mentors. For low-income children living in Chicago, there is a multitude of obstacles to play as well as the opportunity to connect with a caring adult.

HH has five components:

1) Mentoring
2) Nightly basketball drills and games
3) Structured leadership activities
4) Group dinners
5) Career guest speakers
We are seeking local professionals (all industries welcomed) who can coach students both on and off the court, teaching youth game fundamentals as well as facilitating meaningful discussions about the pursuit of their academic and career goals.

Description

ASAS is a national organization founded by Arnold Schwarzenegger and originally called Inner City Games - offering fitness clinics for low-income youth. Since it began in 1993, ASAS has grown to 17 cities and offers free, comprehensive, daily afterschool programming to over 72,000 students through four national initiatives We Are Ready (high school graduation), Sports as a Hook (healthy living), Career Exploration Opportunities (workforce readiness), Life Service Action (service learning).

ASAS-Chicago partners with Chicago Public Schools to provide innovative and impactful programs that serve over 30,000 students in grades K-8 at 150 schools. Working directly in school sites, ASAS-Chicago provides academic support, enrichment activities, health and fitness opportunities as well as support to school to respond to crises around high school graduation, obesity, civic engagement and work force readiness. In 2015, ASAS-Chicago launched a model school site at Dewey School of Excellence in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago and will be serving 150 students with 3 hours of afterschool program every school day and Saturday mornings.
