Who We Are: Huckleberry Youth Programs is a non-profit providing critical intervention and preventative care to underserved youth in the Bay Area.

We are guided by our mission to educate, inspire and support underserved youth to develop healthy life choices, to maximize their potential, and to realize their dreams .

In 1967, Huckleberry opened its flagship program, Huckleberry House, the first runaway youth shelter in the nation, at a time when running away as a youth was considered a crime. Over fifty years later, we have grown to provide thousands of youth annually with a continuum of services that remains rooted, just as it did in 1967, in the fundamental rights of young people to be safe, healthy, educated, and treated justly.

What We Do: Huckleberry has expanded upon its youth-centered services, using a trauma-informed and restorative justice framework to collaborate with youth and families to build healthier relationships and more vibrant futures for themselves. Our services have expanded to include primary and reproductive care, counseling, case management, health education, juvenile justice diversion, and college access to underserved youth and families. Huckleberry’s longevity is a testament to the agency’s values, and our ability to adapt and innovate to meet the ever-changing needs of our community. Each year, Huckleberry hosts two major FUNdraisers along with smaller, social gatherings like Cocktails for a Cause/bar nights, exclusive dining experiences and shows/performances.

What's the Huckleberry Young Professionals Board (HYPB)?: HYPB is a group of young professionals who are passionate about Huckleberry's mission and are interested in using their knowledge, skills, and network to raise awareness and mobilize support for various Huckleberry programs. We plan, market, and execute several fundraisers throughout the year from guest bartending at local San Francisco bars to virtual yoga classes. We also use our professional network to help Huckleberry create volunteer opportunities and build partnerships with local corporations.

Mission Statement

Huckleberry’s mission is to educate, inspire, and support underserved youth to develop healthy life choices, to maximize their potential, and to realize their dreams. Since 1967, we have accomplished this by providingSan Francisco and Marin youth and families with a network of services offered by caring peers and adults.

Description

Our tradition of caring for Bay Area youth began in 1967, during the "Summer of Love" when large numbers of youth from across the country came to San Francisco to participate in the jubilant moment of change and newfound freedom. Many of those arriving in the city were runaway teens who had left their homes and families in other cities and states and then wandered the Haight without money, friends, or connections. Huckleberry House, the first shelter for runaway youth in the nation, was developed to help these vulnerable youth reconnect with their families and return to the safety of their homes. Huckleberry used its experience in helping runaway youth to inform its advocacy for the creation of a network of runaway shelters nationally. That dream was realized in 1974 with the passage of the Runaway Youth Act, which today funds more than 350 programs nationally modeled on Huckleberry House. Throughout the decades since then, Huckleberry has continued to develop innovative programming to respond to the changing needs of youth. Today, Huckleberry is recognized nationally for its leadership in runaway and homeless youth services, adolescent health, and juvenile justice programming.
