ORGANIZATION: Catholic Charities Sf

We invite you to visit the Star Community Home to learn about the program and clients we serve. You will have the opportunity to hear from the program director about how we are effectively improving the lives of our clients and positively touching our communities through measurable outcomes. We will discuss the opportunities for volunteer engagement at Star Community Home and answer any questions you may have as you consider getting involved as a volunteer.

Thanks to generous funding from the Salesforce Foundation and the generous support of Little Children's Aid, Star Community Home gives families a safe place to live while developing a plan to secure stability and housing.

Families typically arrive at Star Community Home in crisis: homeless, fearful, hungry, lonely, desperate and penniless. The home immediately offers a safe place to live, providing nutritious meals and beginning to build the skills necessary for a self-sufficient future. Families exit Star with housing, a stable source of income, and the skills they need to establish permanent exits from homelessness.

Single-parent family housing stabilization success rate: 97%

More than 85% of homeless families across the nation are headed by single mothers.

San Francisco Chronicle columnist Heather Knight has described Star Community Home as a "successful, creative answer to a perplexing problem" that has been "universally hailed as a model for solving family homelessness."

Mission Statement

Founded in 1907 and rooted in traditions of charity and justice, Catholic Charities supports families, youth, aging adults, adults with disabilities through social services and opportunities for healthy growth and development.

Description

We believe that families must be supported and strengthened. We believe seniors should be allowed to age in place with dignity. We believe immigrants and refugees should be welcomed with love and compassion. We believe every person deserves a chance to grow in safety. We believe we all have a responsibility to care for our neighbor. We believe in developing young minds and encouraging compassion in our community. We believe in strengthening families and reducing poverty. Rooted in our faith-based values of charity and justice, the mission of Catholic Charities is to serve and advocate for the poor, the sick, the distressed, children, youth, families, immigrants, and seniors, regardless of their faith.

Thanks to the help of volunteers and staff in 2017 we served almost 35,000 clients. 3,024 clients were served by Homelessness and Housing Services. Almost 5,000 refugee and immigrant consultations were provided and 2,332 seniors were served. In addition 25,459 youth were served in San Francisco, Marin and San Mateo.
