January is National Mentoring Month.

We are currently in the 16th year of National Mentoring Month. Every January, since 2002, Big Brothers Big Sisters Pikes Peak leverages National Mentoring Month to launch a conversation on the significance of our mentoring programs and to recruit volunteers to make a difference in the lives of youth in the communities of El Paso County.

2018 is no different. Again, we are hoping that this celebratory month will initiate dialogue about the importance of our programs and the impact that our volunteer mentors have.

Youth who participate in our match relationships:

Have better performance in school

Get along better with adults, peers, teachers and family

Have improved self-esteem

And have a better vision for their future

Mentor2.0 is our high school mentoring program that matches students from Atlas Preparatory School with college-educated mentors in the Colorado Springs community, providing the students with support and guidance through their high school career to prepare them for college and the workforce.

Many of these students are facing adversity, unique challenges and obstacles in various forms.

The majority of the mentorship is done over a secure online platform (iMentor) as a "pen pal mentorship" - this allows for busy professionals to flex their time-investment around their schedules. In addition, there are monthly events (on Tuesday evenings) for in-person mentoring facilitated by Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Volunteers must be 21 years of age and have the equivalent credit hours of a two-year degree. Volunteers must also be willing to commit to the program for four years, as we try to make matches from freshman year through graduation - we want the students to have an example of consistency and commitment in their lives.

This program is our biggest need for volunteers.
