General Coordinator Guidelines:

  1. Completing the preparation for the course prior to the first day of classes, ensuring teachers are prepared and potential students are informed about the classes.
  2. Scheduling and leading two teacher meetings (one before the semester and one half-way through)
  3. Weekly organization of the folders and contact with the volunteer teachers
  4. Arranging the Graduation Party and any other special events s/he chooses (e.g. library visit/Know Your Rights training.
  5. Great communication skills are required to be successful in this position.
  6. If the coordinator would like, they will be more than welcome to teach a class or two themselves.

Our mission is one of living simply and communally with multicultural volunteers and guests, helping those most in need in East Oakland community, supporting an extended community of former guests in keeping itself organized and healthy, and advocating for the elimination of unjust structures locally and globally.

Description

The Oakland Catholic Worker has served as a transitional shelter and accompaniment program for Latin American refugees since 1986. In addition we serve our East Oakland neighbors in need by offering:

  • English as a Second Language classes
  • Hot food and weekly grocery distribution programs
  • A gathering space for the religious and cultural needs of our extended community
  • Advocacy promoting change with those marginalized by existing unjust political, social and economic structures
