About

The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site is seeking volunteers to assist with the Frederick Douglass Bicentennial Kick-Off and Birthday Celebration. Planned activities include house tours, special lectures, musical performances, dramatic performances, and hands-on children activities. Volunteer jobs and shifts are listed below.

  • Volunteers will be scheduled for 3-4 hour shifts (volunteers can work two or more shifts)
  • Volunteers are needed Saturday, February 17th and Sunday, February 18th
  • Volunteer service eligible for students Community Service Project Hours requirement

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 17

Volunteer Shifts Available

Parking Assistant*- Directs cars for VIPs in nearby parking lots

9 - 10:30am; 10:30am-12pm

Entrance Greeter*- Provides information to visitors at entry points

9am - 12pm; 12 - 3pm; 3 - 6pm


Opening Ceremony Greeter-
Provides information to visitors during morning ceremony under heated tent

9am - 12pm

House Tour Guide - Presents a brief pre-prepared talk (about one paragraph) while stationed inside the historic house

12 - 3pm; 3 - 6pm


Visitor Center Assistant- Provides information and assists with activities inside the Visitor Center

9am - 12pm; 12 - 3pm; 3 - 6pm

Tent Activity Aide-Provides information to visitors during afternoon activities under heated tent

12-2pm; 2-4pm

Grounds Activity Aide*- Assists with activities on the grounds, including guiding reenactors and/or facilitating in Civil War soldier drills

12-2pm; 2-4pm

Arts Center Aide- Assists with activities at the Anacostia Arts Center, including providing info to visitors, line management at photo booth, and assisting performers

12:30-2pm; 2:30-5pm

National Park Service staff will be available to train volunteers and direct all event activities during the event. Any position marked with an asterisk (*) should be prepared for winter weather conditions. We will confirm your assignment prior to the event and schedule event orientation.

Public transportation is recommended. The nearest Metro station is Anacostia (Green Line) and there is also bus service. A special event shuttle will transport volunteers and visitors from the Anacostia Metro station to the Frederick Douglass National Historic Site and the Anacostia Arts Center on February 17 and 18
