Background

Our Military Kids serves with the mission to recognize and support the children of deployed military personnel with the National Guard and Reserve Forces, as well as the children of those recovering from injuries sustained in service to our nation. The program covers fees for military children, ages 5-18 years old, to participate in extracurricular activities - in their own communities - and help alleviate the stress and anxiety of knowing a parent is in harm’s way or watching a parent endure lengthy medical treatment.

Since 2004, Our Military Kids has provided over 56,000 grants totaling nearly $26 million to children of service members from every branch of the military living in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and all U.S. territories.

Mission Statement

Our Military Kids, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to provide support and recognition to military children. This may include children ages 3 years through the 12 th grade of deployed National Guard and Reserve service members, along with children of Wounded and Fallen Warriors from all branches of service. The grants to children pay for fees associated with athletic, fine arts, and tutoring programs. Our Military Kids’ grants keep military children engaged in activities of their choosing, helping to relieve the stress of separation from a parent by providing a positive distraction, minimizing emotional destabilization, building self esteem, and enabling academic achievement.

Description

Grants to children of deployed National Guard and Reserve troops - the grants cover fees for activities that keep the children's minds and bodies connected with positive experiences while they are trying to cope with the challenges and anxiety that accompany a separation from a military parent serving overseas in a warzone. Children are able to maintain involvement in activities they enjoyed prior to deployment or engage in a new activity of their choosing. For some, a grant to provide tutoring services to maintain academic proficiency during a stressful time is what is most helpful.

Children of our Severely Injured - not unlike the children of our deployed, children of our severely injured have difficulty when separated from their parents who are undergoing treatment. Beyond that, they also have a difficult time adjusting to their new normal, living with a parent who is altered because of visible or invisible wounds of war. It is our goal to help these children remain active in their communities, which helps to provide not only an outlet but also a network of support from peers and adult mentors. It is not only beneficial for the children, but also the parents. Isolation makes recovery from PTS more challenging, and getting children on the basketball court, baseball field, dance studio and horse stables is therapeutic for the entire family. It is about the family healing from the kids up!
