Mission Statement

DECREASE CRIME AND IMPROVE PUBLIC SAFETY WITHIN THE CITY OF DETROIT: BE A PART OF BUILDING A SAFER FUTURE FOR DETROIT

Description

The AmeriCorps Urban Safety Program collaborates with residents of Detroit, local-non profits, businesses and police departments to achieve a permanent reduction in crime by improving levels of neighborhood guardianship and reducing victim attractiveness and susceptibility. AmeriCorps members serve as community organizers throughout the City of Detroit by educating residents through leafletting, performing board ups & clean ups to reduce blight, conducting home safety assessments and partnering with residents to create & sustain neighborhood block clubs and community patrols to identify and problem solve issues of public safety. Members are called upon to be self-directed, to engage citizens, plan community projects and coordinate volunteer efforts.
Service requirements: Minimum of 18 yrs old, High School Diploma and or 2yrs of college credits or comparable experience. Regular or reliable access to a car is recommended.
Benefits include:Bi-weekly stipend, Education Award upon completion of service, health coverage & child care assistance if eligible.
