Make an Impact this Spring in Your Community!

By the age of 3, children born into low-income families hear roughly 30 million fewer words than their more affluent peers. That’s where Jumpstart comes in. Jumpstart for Young Children needs volunteers to provide reading and tutoring support to Pre-Kindergarten students in an elementary school in Ward 5 of Washington DC to work towards closing the kindergarten readiness gap. You will work in small groups with students using Jumpstart activities that are designed to focus specifically on building the key skills that research shows are critical in supporting children’s language, literacy, and social-emotional development. We are looking for reliable volunteers to work with students for at least 2-3 hours a week from Monday to Thursday in the after-school space.Group sizes will typically range from 3-6 students.

No teaching experience required. You must be a current high school senior or older, pass a background check, and commit to at least 2-3 hours per week and attend 1 day of training before starting.

Mission Statement

At Jumpstart, we know that every child is born with the potential to succeed in school and in life. We also know that the foundation for that success is established in the early years, before a child enters kindergarten. To cultivate a child's social, emotional and intellectual readiness, Jumpstart brings college students and community volunteers together with preschool children for year long, individualized tutoring and mentoring. Since 1993, more than 70,000 preschool children across America have benefited from millions of hours of Jumpstart service. This year alone, Jumpstart volunteers are serving more than one million hours with 15,000 preschool children in 80 communities across America. Today, Jumpstart is recognized as a one of the nation's leading nonprofit organization in the field of early childhood education. Support us as we work toward the day every child in America enters school prepared to succeed
