Job Summary
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Patient/Family Services Volunteer provides various services as needed or requested to patients and their families including supportive care, comfort, and caregiver relief.
Responsibilities and Duties
FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Initiates and maintains contact with assigned patient/family.
Offers various forms of assistance, comfort measure, supportive services, including reading to and writing for patient, sitting at bedside, especially during dying process and caregiver relief for families.
Assists patients and families to cope with problems of terminal illness and death; helps them to express feelings and concerns.
Completes written reports of contact and submits to the Volunteer Coordinator.
Refers to the Volunteer Coordinator any immediate needs, problems or concerns.
Attends on-going education programs and peer support groups, as requested.
Continues to provide emotional support to family during bereavement as appropriate or recommend bereavement follow-up by others.

Qualifications and Skills
REPORTS TO: Volunteer Coordinator
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Completion of hospice volunteer training program.
Credentials: None
Experience: None
Core Competencies: Ability to deal with death and dying comfortably and demonstrate good listening skills. Willing to participate in on-going programs and peer support groups. Make a time commitment of one year to serve a minimum of two hours a week as needed.
Other: Valid driver’s license and auto insurance

Our volunteers serve as an integral part of the interdisciplinary group in various settings, providing companionship for the patient and sometimes family members. They offer bereavement and administrative support as well as music and pet therapy. Whatever your skill level, we would love to talk with you.
