Come out to Maine's Premiere Horse Shelter and get to know the horses! Maine State Society for the Protection of Animals is seeking volunteers who are eager to clean stalls. With over 40 horses in the barn, we have plenty of dirty stalls that are in need of some attention.

Mission Statement

Mission: To provide refuge, rehabilitation, and placement of seized equines; support the placement of surrenders, and educate the public. Vision: The elimination of equine abuse and neglect

Description

Volunteers are needed for general care and upkeep of two barns with 40+/- horses. No previous experience is necessary. Training will be provided.

The Society uses its resoucres to provide direct care to equines who have suffered abuse. The Society promotes humane treatment, training and use of equines through education and hands-on experiences. It collaborates with other animal serving agencies to maximize the resources of all. Originally formed in 1872 to protect the horses who pulled Portland's streetcars, the Society now provides around the clock on site staffing, has access to veterinary services twenty-four hours a day, and maintains nearly one hundred equines on its farm facilities. Animals who have been seized by Maine's law enforcement officials and placed by court order with the Society, provided the animals are not suffering, are kept for the entirety of their lives or placed in forever homes. The MSSPA is a tax-exempt, 501(c) (3) and receives no federal, state or local funding.
