ORGANIZATION: Words Alive

Do you have a talent for writing, want to be a blog writer, and want to gain communications experience?! Help promote literacy advocacy online!

We are looking for an intern to assist the Office & Communication Coordinator with the day-to-day functions of the Communication Department. Interns would help maintain and grow the Words Alive blog as well as monitor and grow our presence in the press. We are looking for someone with a natural talent for writing, familiarity with blog writing, and a reliable work ethic.

Communication Interns will be tasked with the following:

  • Brainstorm ideas and write long-form content for the Words Alive blog
  • Maintain a consistent blog posting schedule
  • Use Google Alerts, Mention, Twitter searches, and more to track press mentions of Words Alive and our work, both in-print and online
  • Maintain an organized spreadsheet of all Words Alive mentions and press contacts
  • Write or assist with press releases for all major Words Alive campaigns and events
  • Maintain the Words Alive "Help A Reporter Out" account and help identify other press-related opportunities
  • Assist with any other communication projects that may arise

Ideal Interns would:

  • Have excellent written and verbal English communication
  • Possess basic knowledge of the media landscape and social media platforms
  • Be an organized, efficient, and dedicated self-starter
  • Be able to work with minimal supervision
  • Be comfortable working within deadlines
  • Have reliable transportation

Hours and Location:

Interns will work remotely and at the Words Alive office located at 5111 Santa Fe St. Suite 219, San Diego, CA 92109. Interns can expect to commit 5-7 hours/week. Words Alive will work with the intern to accommodate class schedules and for-credit requirements. *Start/end dates are flexible.

Required paperwork and training:

Successful candidates will need to submit a completed volunteer application and resume to Erin Rexin at erin@wordsalive.org and attend a new volunteer orientation. In addition, send a short writing sample to Sara Mortensen at sara@wordsalive.org. For the writing sample, please submit a short sample (1-2 paragraphs) answering the question: why is literacy is important to focus on in San Diego?
