PO BOX 573, GLEN ALPINE, NC 28628, US

Mission Statement

ICAN of Santa Barbara is a chapter of the International Cesarean Awareness Network, Inc. (ICAN), a nonprofit organization whose mission is to improve maternal-child health by reducing preventable cesareans through education, supporting cesarean recovery, and advocating for vaginal birth after cesarean (VBAC).

Description

We are improving health outcomes for moms and babies in Santa Barbara County by advocating for the implementation of evidence based practices in policies and procedures supported by Healthy People 2020, the World Health Organization, and the California Maternal Health Care Coalition. Included in these practices are the reduction of primary cesareans and the expansion of birth options for all families. The US is currently the the only developed nation with a rising maternal mortality and morbidity rate. We use evidence based research to educate birth consumers and providers on what evidence based care includes. These issues directly relate to improving birth outcomes. Topics include: big babies, cesarean care, eating and drinking in labor, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), due dates, doulas, failure to progress, access to affordable birth options, informed consent, informed refusal, patient autonomy, etc.
