Direct Volunteering with Hospice Patients

We are actively looking for volunteers to spend some quality time with our Hospice patients. In Geneseo we currently have patients at Hammond-Henry, and Hillcrest and some patients who are still living in their own homes.

The spirit of hospice volunteering is borne from a genuine desire to give comfort, peace, and care to patients, caregivers, and families during the end of life.Hospice volunteers have a tremendous impact on the lives of the patients that they serve the hospice team which they are a part, and the families and friends of the terminally ill. Preferred will provide you with volunteer training so you will be well equipped to work with our patients.

Direct care volunteers can provide support and comfort to patients and families in many ways. Several volunteer options you can choose from include:

• Preparing meals for patients and families

• Providing transportation to patients, families, and the children of the families

• Assisting in light household chores

• Sitting and talking with patients to provide companionship and a comforting presence

• Playing music for patients to provide a soothing and joyful atmosphere

• Playing board games, or doing arts and crafts with the patient
• Reading books or the newspaper out loud to pass the time
