Looking for more information about volunteering with Tacoma Tool Library? Join us and other interested community members every 3rd Saturday of the month from 10am-11am for an orientation and discussion about how you can get involved! We are 100% volunteer run and rely on community members to keep us going. There are plenty of ways to get involved and plenty of ways to make this rewarding volunteer opportunity fit your schedule. Stop by, have a doughnut, learn about how we operate and see how you fit into the Tacoma Tool Library Team.

Below are the list of our current volunteer opportunities:

  1. Librarian/ Open Hours Staffing: During TTL open hours volunteers are responsible for checking tools in and out, signing up new members, putting away tools, and general customer service to the public and members alike. The library is open on Wednesdays, 5pm-8pm and Saturdays, 10am - 5pm. No tool knowledge is necessary to be a volunteer, this is a learning atmosphere
  2. Tool Repair and Maintenance Work Partier: Volunteers spend time repairing and maintaining tools on the 4th Sunday of the month from 10 am - 1 pm. Tasks include assessing donated items, assessing the condition and safety of hand and power tools, basic tool repair, basic tool cleaning and maintenance.
  3. Tool Cataloging Work Partier: Volunteers spend time sorting donated tools and then cataloging them into our database, MyTurn. This is a great option for someone without routine time available, but who can spare an afternoon here and there throughout the year. We hold a monthly cataloging party on the 2nd Sunday of the month from 10 am - 1 pm.
  4. Event Staffing: We occasionally require help representing TTL at local events such as farmers’ markets and maker faires, which we attend to promote our organization, mission, and services. Duties vary, but include speaking with many different strangers about TTL, setting up and breaking down a table and display, signing up new members, handling cash and card payments, and teaching/moderating small activities or workshops.
  5. Workshop Leader: A major part of TTL’s mission is providing not only tools, but the training to use them safely and effectively. If you have a skill you’d like to share, please let us know, and we’d love to make arrangements with you to teach!

About Tacoma Tool Library

Location:

1100 Court F, Tacoma, WA 98402, US

Mission Statement

Tacoma Tool Library lowers the barriers to tackling projects by providing tools, knowledge, space and support so that people can improve their lives. Our work will lead to empowered individuals, increased involvement, reduced consumption, more entrepreneurship, better looking neighborhoods, a stronger sharing economy, and a more resilient community.

Description

The library provides low cost access to shared tools and other durable goods, and encourages re-use, repair, and reduced consumption. In addition, it hosts a safe community space for learning how to use household tools, and empowers Tacoma residents to care for their homes and neighborhoods, house by house and block by block.

Want to borrow tools? It’s easy and low-cost to become a member. Members can borrow any of our 1,700+ available tools-everything from hammer drills to hand weeders-for a week with no charge. Use the tools, clean them, and return them to the library when you’re done. That’s it!

Tacoma Tool Library is fiscally sponsored by Zero Waste Washington.
