The Center for Afrofuturist Studies is seeking administrative, media, and development volunteers for its 2018 season of programming. All volunteers will work closely with the CAS team, visiting artists, youth participants in our education programs, cultural partners, and local community members.
Administrative volunteers will:
- manage regular contact with visiting by e-mail, telephone, and in-person
- coordinate services for visiting artists (such as transportation, art supplies, etc.)
- assist with public programming design and execution
- schedule and attend meetings with project partners
Media volunteers will:
- design and distribute monthly online and print newsletters
- manage social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr)
- coordinate with event photographer/videographer
- maintain CAS website
- write press releases for all events
- communicate regularly with local and national press outlets
Development volunteers will:
- research funding and grant opportunities
- initiate and maintain contact with grant officers
- compose letters of inquiry and grant applications
- initiate and maintain contact with local partners, donors, and sponsors

Mission Statement
Public Space One (PS1) is a nonprofit arts organization operating as an expansive, collaborative, communal social sculpture. It runs on the sweat equity of artists, actors, activists, musicians, performers, writers, and other people. Through a variety of programs, presentations, and exhibitions in downtown Iowa City, it is an experimental platform for multiple forms of creative expression, social happenings, and other community-engaged activities. PS1 is a tax-exempt 501(c)3 entity. It is located on the lower level of 120 N. Dubuque St in the Wesley Center. This process-oriented, community art space hosts both private and communal art studios, a community print shop (@Iowa City Press Co-op), a kitchen, and is home to a plethora of programming including low-to-no-cost workshops, DIY music shows, Free Art School, and other performances/events.
Description
The Center for Afrofuturist Studies (CAS) at Public Space One is an artist residency program based in Iowa City for artists of color whose work engages the futures of black and POC lives. Organized in collaboration with Public Space One and several Iowa City organizations, CAS hosts artists-in-residence and visiting artists whose lectures, workshops, public forums, and exhibitions explore the intersections of race, technology, and the diaspora.
Since 2016, the CAS has hosted 11 artists and writers of color from around the country: Tiona McClodden, Kameelah Janan Rasheed, Louis Chude-Sokei, Krista Franklin, Alexandria Eregbu, Devin Cain, Terence Nance, Kat Simóne Reynolds, Shawné Michaelain Holloway, Justin Allen, and Jade Ariana Fair.
