WHO IS DUNK?
We are a nonprofit, community based organization that empowers deprived communities by nurturing young student-athletes so they may become agents of change
WHAT ARE OUR GOALS?
DUNK aims to create a safe spaces for at-risk children and women aged 8-19. We do this by providing a safe space for our beneficiaries to play, learn, and grow; through sports, after-school support, life-skills, and vocational training.
DUNK's approach is based on 3 pillars:
Athletic Development Academic Development Personal Development
WE ACHIEVE OUR GOALS WITH 4 IMPACT DRIVEN PROGRAMS
BASKETBALL TRAINING 8 teams established Develop the physical ability of children An opportunity for Children's right to play Having fun!
AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT Providing kids help with school work Inspiring kids to strive for more Support for those falling behind Provide scholarship for needy students
LIFE SKILLS TRAINING Develop emotional and social competences Encourage personal and cognitive growth Empower children to be agents of change
SEW-YOUR-FUTURE Providing vocational skills to teen mothers A safe haven from abuse Free daycare for working young mothers
This is the first program which allows us to appeal and reach out to children in communities we adopt. We provide children with free sports equipment and friendly coaching as this has been a barrier for them to exercise their rights to play. So far we have 8 teams with 2 all girls teams.
AFTER SCHOOL SUPPORT
Through partnership with schools and support from parents, members school report cards are collected and assistance is given to students with difficulties at school. Students excelling at school are also granted support in the form of supplies or fees paid. We aim to provide all of our students with scholarships.
LIFE SKILLS TRAINING
Life Skills Training days provide our students with the space and time to prepare for the reality of the world as they exit DUNK programs. Members are required to participate in practical and theoretical session on our 5 carefully selected values using sports as a tool for change.
SEW YOUR FUTURE (SYF)
Sew-Your-Future is DUNK's newest program. It was created based on the needs of the Jamestown community. With many teenage mothers and at-risk women, DUNK worked to create a vocational skills center just for them. The SYF center teaches sewing and business skills and provides free daycare for the participants children.
