About

SUMMARY: The Afterschool Program Development Volunteer/Intern will work closely with the ASC Deputy Director to support state service commissions with implementing the ASC Afterschool Program Development grant and related activities with the goal to expand the quality and quantity of afterschool opportunities through service. The volunteer/intern will work independently and report directly to the Deputy Director. S/he will participate in regular meetings (in-person or by phone); participate in an orientation; and communicate regularly with the Deputy Director and ASC team.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (negotiable depending on areas of interest/expertise):

  • Gather information and compile a resource book on existing AmeriCorps program models working in afterschool settings and/or addressing challenges related to serving students during out-of-school time
  • Identify existing program models utilizing service-learning as a strategy to engage youth during out-of-school time
  • Support deputy director in organizing monthly afterschool program development grant monthly learning calls and in-person convening
  • Support opportunities to educate afterschool networks and afterschool programs on the opportunity to utilize national service as a strategy to expand the quality and quantity of afterschool opportunities
  • Support opportunities to support state service commissions in developing new programs to expand the quality and quantity of afterschool opportunities
  • Manage the ASC Afterschool Program Development Basecamp, an online community for ASC Afterschool Program Development grantees
  • Other duties as assigned related to afterschool program development

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
  • Familiarity with educational programming, afterschool or "out of school" time programming or willingness to learn about this
  • Familiarity with national service and AmeriCorps programs or willingness to learn about this
  • Familiarity with service-learning programming or willingness to learn more
  • Good verbal and written skills.

TIMEFRAME:
  • Length of commitment: Estimated total hours: 2-8 hours per week, year-round (negotiable)
  • Scheduling will be at the discretion of volunteer/intern with input from Deputy Director
  • Specific days/times needed: Flexible based on other volunteer/intern’s availability
WORKSITE: This is a volunteer opportunity, to be completed using the volunteer’s own technology equipment and/or software, phone, and Internet connection. Deputy Director is available to meet Volunteer/Intern regularly via web meetings or in-person in Des Moines, IA.
